Horwich Triathlon, often referred to as ‘The Race to the Pike’ and the ‘Kona of the North’, is one of the oldest triathlon events in the North West, with a history spanning over 25 years. 25M POOL
The sprint distance swim takes place in a 25m pool within the leisure centre, with competitors completing 16 lengths to finish the course. This controlled environment is ideal for athletes of all abilities, offering calm water conditions and a structured format. Each swimmer is assigned their own lane along with a specific start time, ensuring a smooth and well-organised experience participants must be ready to begin promptly at their allocated time.
ROAD
The 20km sprint distance bike course takes riders on a scenic loop around the iconic Rivington Pike, offering a rewarding mix of rolling hills and sweeping countryside views. This undulating route provides just the right level of challenge for both first-time triathletes and experienced racers, with steady climbs balanced by fast, flowing descents. As you navigate the quiet roads around Rivington, you’ll be treated to classic Lancashire landscapes, making this a memorable and enjoyable bike leg from start to finish.
ROAD
After racking your bike, you’ll head out onto a fast and straightforward 5km run course, set on closed roads. The route follows a 2.5km out-and-back format, allowing athletes to settle into a steady rhythm before turning and pushing for the finish. With its flat profile and smooth surface, this is a great opportunity to pick up the pace and chase a strong time. The simple layout also creates a supportive atmosphere, with plenty of chances to see fellow competitors as you power through the final stage of the race.

The standard distance swim takes place in a 25m pool within the leisure centre, with competitors completing 20 lengths to cover the 500m course. This controlled environment is ideal for athletes of all abilities, offering calm water conditions and a structured, easy-to-follow format. Each swimmer is allocated their own lane along with a set start time, ensuring a smooth and well-organised experience, participants must be ready to begin promptly at their assigned time.
ROAD
The 37km standard distance bike course delivers a more demanding test of endurance and pacing, taking riders on a challenging loop around the iconic Rivington Pike. Featuring a series of rolling climbs and fast descents, this undulating route rewards athletes who can manage their effort and maintain consistent power throughout. The quiet Lancashire roads provide the perfect setting to find your rhythm, with opportunities to push on the climbs and carry speed on the descents, making this a decisive and rewarding section of the race.

The simple layout also creates an encouraging race atmosphere, with regular opportunities to see other competitors as you power through the final stage.

The Pike Trail Runs are a brand new addition to the Horwich event day, offering both full and half trail distances set around the iconic Rivington Pike. These routes take runners off-road and into the heart of the local landscape, featuring a mix of rugged trails, steady climbs and breathtaking views. Whether you’re stepping up to a longer distance or simply love the thrill of trail running, the Pike Trail Runs deliver a challenging and memorable experience in one of the North West’s most scenic locations.
