Southport Triathlon is one of the North West’s most exciting multi-sport events, bringing athletes together for an unforgettable swim, bike and run challenge along the famous Merseyside coastline. Based at Waterside Lodge, a modern purpose-built two-storey Activity Centre on Southport Marine Lake, the event provides an excellent race venue with outstanding facilities and direct access to the open water swim start.

The Southport Sprint Distance events offer the perfect introduction to multi-sport racing, combining an exciting open water swim with fast and scenic bike and run routes along the Merseyside coastline. Featuring a range of disciplines including Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquabike and Aquathlon, these accessible events are designed for athletes of all abilities. Whether you’re taking on your first race or looking to build speed and confidence over shorter distances, the Southport Sprint Distance delivers a well-organised, friendly and rewarding race experience at one of the North West’s most popular triathlon venues.
lake swim
The 750m swim route takes place in the open water of Southport Marine Lake, starting from the pontoon at Waterside Lodge before looping around the island directly in front of swimmers at the start. Sprint Distance athletes complete one lap of the course before exiting the water via the marked slipway close to transition near West Lancs Yacht Club. The open water format creates an exciting and memorable start to the race while remaining accessible for both experienced triathletes and athletes taking on their first open water swim challenge. Kayaks, safety boats and marshals will be positioned throughout the swim course to support participants, maintain safe race conditions and help ensure a smooth flow for all competitors entering and exiting the water.
ROAD
The 20km bike route follows a fast and scenic coastal course along Southport’s famous Marine Drive and surrounding roads. After leaving transition at Waterside Lodge, cyclists head south along the Coastal Road towards Pontins before turning and returning north past the race venue and towards Crossens, creating a smooth and flowing route that is ideal for maintaining a strong race pace. Sprint Distance athletes complete one lap of the course before returning to transition, while the route benefits from extensive road closures and traffic management to provide a safer and more enjoyable racing experience. Marshals, race officials and clear signage will be positioned throughout the bike course to support navigation, maintain rider safety and ensure the smooth flow of competitors across the event.

The 5km run route follows a flat and fast pathway course around the Southport Triathlon venue, providing an enjoyable final stage to the race for athletes of all abilities. The route stays away from public roads and uses the pedestrian paths and pavements surrounding the Marine Lake area, creating a smooth and accessible run course with plenty of support around the venue. Clear signage, directional arrows and marshals will be positioned throughout the route to assist navigation and maintain a safe flow for competitors and members of the public using the paths. A drinks station with water will also be available on the course to help athletes stay hydrated as they make their way towards the finish line.
The Southport Standard Distance events provide a rewarding multi-sport challenge for athletes looking to test themselves over longer distances in a scenic coastal setting. Featuring Standard Triathlon, Duathlon and Aquabike race options, the event combines an exciting open water swim with fast bike and run courses around the Southport coastline and surrounding roads. Designed for both experienced endurance athletes and competitors stepping up from sprint distance racing, the Southport Standard Distance delivers a well-organised, supportive and memorable race experience at one of the North West’s leading triathlon venues.

Participants are required to be a British Triathlon member or to have purchased a British Triathlon Race Pass to take part in the event. Participants must hold either a British Triathlon ‘Core’ or ‘Ultimate’ membership or purchase a single use Race Pass for Horwich Triathlon from British Triathlon.
